I use MetalWax. It is a two-stage process; first stage is a gentle acid that goes on with a watery rag to clean the surface. Wipe dry with a separate cloth. Then use the Wax. This company says that the compounds leave a lit of microscopic grit, which attracts dust and dirt, thus clouding up the surface, thus requiring MORE compounding, which leaves the girt, etc etc etc.
Go to a Harley motorcycle show, the ones with all sorts of vendors. There is usually some guy with a metal polishing system that polishes the bottoms of aluminium cans, as samples.
