Have the salvage Explorer engine bac in the coupe.
The culprit seems to have been the gear on the Acel distributor: Was ground sharp b the old roller cam and the debris got into the old engine thus causingthe knock.
HAve found a steel gear for the distributor for the replacement engine. Hope to fire it up Friday. Will let everyone know. I appreicate the help.
Next question: Do you think part of the distributor gear failure could have been improper spacing? Remember reading something on this forum on this. Did you have to space your distrubutor when you put it on your Explorer motor?
