I am sure that David is right. Sounds like a 351. I have some pics of a 302 and a 351 next to each other on this site. You can see how much taller and wider the 351 is when compared to the 302. Check out the pictures and you can compare yours to them if it will help you.
If you look at the front of both engines you can see that the 302 block stops just above the water pump and timing cover. The 351 due to the longer stroke is a few inches above the pump and cover. A really easy way to id small blocks, 289&302 to a 351.
Hope this helps. Remember that the newer blocks are much thinner in the walls than the older ones.
