Sounds like a wild ride. We did not use any thing to push the door open as the latch system did it for us. If you give me a call Monday I will call Dave, the guy that owns the car with all the remote openers on it, and set up a time for him to bring the car over or for us to go look at it.
If you stop by I will be more than happy to show you our demo car that my soon to be 70 year old dad drives most everyday.
