David: Regarding the light, small diameter clutch. Great idea!
I used to autoX a nice Datsun 510. I switched to a 7" single disc Tilton Road Race type clutch & small diameter flywheel and the engine RPM'D scarey fast. It increased the acceleration dramatically but had a very unforgiving manner regarding slippage. It was like a light switch, disengaged or fully engaged. Did not like being slipped, consequently very little town driving. Garage & trailer Queen. The idea is good but it would need to be multi disc to absorb the torque & allow some slippage. Tilton makes a setup like you describe.
