It is my understanding that you would have to reload the sound card. I did when I had trouble with mine a few weeks ago.

If they truely have XP, when they turn on the computer to start up the XP logo should show prominantly on the desktop. You can also check the version from the Microsoft website. If this guy is truely selling pirated software your friends should report him to Microsoft. The fines are real steep for that.
