Bob;

A windage tray bolts to the main cap bolts,should not make any difference wether you use a front or rear sump pan......I think the main purpose of a windage tray is for the oil "splash" off the crank.......as far as auto-cross/roadracing,you may be thinking of a different oil pan with the trap doors in it and the side kick-outs,these keep the oil in the bottom of the pan so the pick-up does not suck air under hard cornering/accelaration............

I have both a windage tray and a 9 quart Canton road race pan on my 351-W............

Before I had the Canton road race pan,when I did a few open tracks,I just simply added an extra quart of oil to my stock 5 quart pan for insurance...........
