I ran the vent as prescribed in the Assembly Manual. You have to try to get the hose as high as you possibly can in the wheel well. Whenever I fill up, as the tank reaches the full level, I can hear a brief gurgle or burp sound that lets me know it is full. If I continue to pump gas past the point when I hear that sound, gas will flow out of the vent hose and onto the ground.

I have found that with time, listening for the gurgle has become second nature and overfilling (and losing gas through the vent hose) is not a problem.
