It sounds like you have worn plastic shifter rod bushings and/or slop between the clip and shifter arm.
Hurst (Mr. Gasket) makes a replacement kit that uses steel bushings,$6.99.With this kit and AN washers of the correct thickness between the clip & arm the rods have zero slop.

Very solid feel.I use this kit on my Hurst in a '67 RS/SS 396 Camaro.
