I agree 1000%. Also, buy some Holley books. At least get Dave Emanual's "Super Tuning and Modifying Holley Carburetors". After reading all of the book, reread it again. Then go and buy whichever carb you want/need for your application, and then tune it!

Old world tech will never go out of style completely, unless the politicians outlaw it
