I use an aftermarket inline paper filter. This gets the "big chunks". Then I use another filter with a ceramic element in it. This I clean every season (7 to 9,000 miles) I went to this 2 filter setup after cloging the ceramic filter late one season.

Exactly what I am doing on my 428FE. It's a good idea to be twice filtered even when running a mechanical pump. It might be more work, but I know my fuel is clean.
