Use 3M Headliner spray adhesive. It works very well when used according to directions. I have used it successfully for all the panels in my Cobra that required bonding grained vinyl upholstery material to aluminum panels. My car is now 4 years old and everything looks great. Use this material the same way you would use contact cement. Steal your wife's rolling pin to ensure no air bubbles between the vinyl and aluminum panel. Any air bubbles can be relieved by using a sharp 25 gauge needle to puncture the vinyl (an advantage to being a physician) and the rolling pin. Laquer thinner will remove any unwanted adhesive and should not attack the vinyl material.
