I reckon it all depends on your wheel and tyre combination. Using pram wheels you need a bit more flex in your axle to save the spokes on rough pavement. (Especially with a heavier driver at the rope). Solid lawn mower wheels are better with the more flexable pine 3x2 axle as it helps with the rough ride. They are good in the corners though and can generate a nice controlable slide where the pram wheel will sometimes dig in or even colapse all together.

How do you go with gripping the cable over the old rope setup? I guess driving with good solid pair of leather workmans gloves would help. They are also handy for stabilising yourself in tight turns when leaning in and putting a hand down.
