Hi Mark - yep, can't call that an "engine" - it's definitely a powerplant! Great project for you and son - looks like fun. I certainly would not take on a project like that without the professional help you have enlisted.
I was about to start a FFR, when I got invited to the local dealer's open house. A very good guy was there who had a Mk III with a Roush 402 installed. We talked a bit, then he asked if I'd like a ride. But what he meant was would I like to drive it - he handed me the key! That was it for me. I ordered an inbound one the next week. I had researched the various options for the past year or so, and am helping a friend with his FFR. He's a racer for whom I have the utmost respect (30 some-odd SCCA Nat'l championships). Last year he drove a SPF for a friend and helped him set it up for the track, and was impressed with the handling and quality (he's not easily impressed). I decided that at my age, it was better to get the completed chassis (I'm even undecided about buying green bananas at my age!). There's still plenty of work to do and lots to learn about the installation of the drive train. The quality of the SPF is very impressive, and I have a great drive train for it. The dealer here is wonderful and supportive. Summing up: build quality, handling potential, dealer. If things go well, next winter I want to build a race-only FFR spec racer, and save this one for posing!
