Are you talking about the SS Braided line? If so you should really make sure you are using the connectors that swivel it does make the routing easier and the connection is much less likely to loosen-up on you. As for making turns you definately need brackets to hold the line in place. Otherwise, you are right; it will go where ever it wants to.
I make a couple of brackets by taking a square of Aluminum and drilling holes through it large enough for the lines. (Realize I have EFI so I needed two gas lines next to each other). Then I cut the square in half - accross (through) the holes. Now you have two parts with a semi-circle in each half that fits the SS line. Tap it so you can tighten it back together; then either screw it down where you want it or recess a hole into the bottom and pop rivet from the other side.
They work great. But it is a lot of effort for something that could just as easily be done with an off the shelf clamp.
