A carb likes airflow coming straight down thru the venturis/barrels. It does not like turbulence just above the throat, which can happen with an element that is in plain view thru the hood scoop on a Cobra.

Many racers use this on their open bodied race cars. This eliminates high speed air rushing across the top of the carb. Just a little thing most racers would worry about ... but not really necessary if you are street driving.
