David and all,
289s and 427s are the stuff dreams are made of. Each has their own pros and cons... and each their followers. I absolutely love the high-revving crackle of a highly-tuned small block. I heard a genuine race-prepared slab side once outside Coys in South Kensington, London, across the road from my old University. Unreal!
But the sound of a 428 FE-powered 427 at the last ever Crystal Palace Sprint in 2000, just sat in the car park, breathing through side pipes, will live with me forever. I still think that is the way I will go, one day, when I can afford a Kirkham. (Nothing else enters my serious considerations!)
Of course, I could be persuaded...
