are you running a one bulb two element system (single Lucas type lights), there has to be a switch that allows the brake and turn signals to separate, I used relays on my car, most turn signals on stock cars use the turn signal switch to do this, unless I know how your car is wired, it would be difficult to know where the problem is, if you have the two light setup, then the turn signals and stop lights are separate
