You left out a bunch of specific information for me to do a complete workup on your system but it not only sound typical but more then adequate. With neither rear working, master cylinder and bias bar would be the first things I check. Also, what kind of grime? Is some thing throwing grease all over the rotors so that they don't work?

Repair and/or proper adjustment is what you most likely need.
