Bob I have found that a product called Plasti-dip spray works very well. My friend has a street rod that he removed all lettering on all the tires by sanding the side walls and exposing lots of white. The Plasti-dip spray has been on for over a year and looks like its just been armoralled. I have seen for sale at Home depot and some local parts stores.
