In OEM application the reverse rotation is utilized because the backside of the belt (SMOOTH) is what drives the pump. The "Big Three" did this primarily to aid in engine packaging. All OEM water pump pulleys are therefore without grooves. You can find grooved pulleys allowing for conventional "Clockwise" rotation but will have to go to aftermarket. March, Coleman, and others. Once the right pulley set up is decided upon the hunt will then change to find the coorrect belt length. The Nextel & Busch teams have done this for years. The parasitic loses are less with this type of belt setup also. Find a circle track racer supply shop they will be able to point you in the right direction.
