Since 1982, U.S. one-cent coins are 97.6%
zinc and 2.4% copper for the
cladding. So to create a car body, you would need to find lots of pre-1982
coins to melt down unless you want to create a
zinc body. The U.S. Mint did
consider using aluminum for one-cent coins and struck a fairly large quantity
of Lincoln one-centers around 1974. But the aluminum coins were ultimately
rejected and never released into circulation. A few, however, "escaped" from
the mint and are in private hands as collectables.
