A lot of people incorrectly call them rookie stripes. Actually, rookie stripes are twin stripes on the rear of the car.

The fender ones are often called "team stripes"...as mentioned above, they were used for the pit crew to tell the cars apart at speed.... remember when SAI seriously raced as a team...all the cars were painted the same color.

I think they used a solid, single broad stripe across the nose in 1964.

And...as far as those "twin stripes" on a 427-style car...just remember, there was never a 427 racing team.
