Inserting my 2 cents here....
1979's a bit late for the type 1 but any of the cars could have been built and registered at any time. Mine's been around since 83-84 or so and still hasn't ever been built by anyone

The rear wheel arches look a bit nicer than the early cars but I'm curious what type of door latches and handles the car has (can't quite see in the pictures). Does it have the 2" x 4" steel tube running through the doors that came in the later cars? The door hinges are early style.

There's really no clear line between the type 1 and type 2 cars, just a series of improvements over time. They probably weren't even called different "types" back then. The type 3 cars are generally anything close to what would become the Butler Racing cars, so the specs are known there. History of the car would be difficult without speaking to previous owners. No one really knows all that went on at Arntz or how many cars are out there, except Steve (maybe), so unless you can trace it back, you might be left wondering.

That being said, they're great solid cars - all of them. You would not be making a bad purchase with that car. It looks to be in good shape (and I've seen some ugly ones) so see what you can negotiate and buy it!
