The gear oil that came out of it was not sludgy, just black; and not alot of it. About 8 years ago I had a racing shop put a solid spacer in it. Other than that I did not touch it.

New one seems to be fine now.

Hey Roscoe. Sorry to hear about the failure. Does the above quote mean that you did not change the fluid for 8 years? I know you track you car. I burned up a 9 inch diff (Auburn Pro) and gears several years ago due to puking fluid out the breather. Replaced the gears and diff (True Trac) and fixed the puking breather. I try to change the fluid every other season now. I think that when I blow up this one I will go with an 8.8. I love the 9 but it is so damn heavy. Most of the axle folk say that aftermarket 8.8's (31 spline) are as tough as the 9.
