Don, back in the late 60's my uncle raced at Eldora. I was his 15 year old pit crew. He always raced in the late model class with his Ford 300 six cylinder, it was really wild, 2-4bbl carbs, aluminum intake, etc. At the time many of the guys were switching to the big 427 Ford engines. My favorite driver beside my uncle was L.J. Lines. He drove a 57 Chev with a big Ford in it. My uncle never won against these guys on the bigger tracks but he always finished in the top ten which I thought was pretty good considering. We also raced quite a bit on the shorter tracks and the big block guys couldn't keep up with that little 6. Many good memories! This was my introduction into fast cars and dirt racing. My uncle co-signed a loan for me when I was 16 so I could buy a 1964 Impala SS with the 409 425hp, 4 speed. I paid $850 for it. It had 56,000 miles and was beautiful red. My car payment was $59 a month, my State farm insurance was $79 a month. I worked at a truck stop at the time and made $1.65 an hour. I don't think I've made $1.65 an hour in about 6 years of building kits. Seems to work out with the mega hours I put in to be about $1.00 an hour.
