Peter,
Seeing you started this thread with a sensible question I will give a sensible answer.
 
 
On most gearboxes the reverse switch only has one wire going to one contact on the switch. When the switch is activated by selecting reverse the wire on the switch is grounded.
Now the light circuit is wired like this.
Positive wire to one side of the lamp.
Wire from the other side of the lamp to the reverse switch.
Thats it.
