Your plan sounds well though out and reasonable. I might suggest you swap the plug wire with another cylinder while you are at it. Pick another cylinder that has about the same length wire and trade with it. If problem follows the wire then easy fix and if same hole gets fouled it helps you confirm the cylinder anyway.
