No, you cannot replace the sending unit or any other part of a Smith's mechanical temperature gauge (I'm assuming that your SPF has the standard Smith's gauges). It's an integral assembly, from sensing bulb to dial, and you have to replace the whole thing. However, Nisonger (
www.nisonger.com) will repair your gauge for about $120. Add shipping both ways and you're getting back up to $140 again. Check their web site and give Peter a call. He's very knowledgable and very helpful.
FWIW, my water temp gauge just failed also. I've gotten a new one, and am going to have the failed one repaired so I'll have a spare. These Smith's gauges work for either
oil or water temp. Only difference is the label on the dial.
