I heard they have found one of the six people that are sending these out. They made $34 million last year by selling bogus anti virus software for viruses that did not even exist in your system.
Here is how it worked.
You would click on a link or open an attachment and you would get a genuine "looking" pop up seemingly from MS. That would tell you your system is infected. Then there would be a link to click for a free scan. Once you clicked the free scan they would tell you your system has _________ viruses and Trojans and links to porno files. To protect your privacy Buy this product for $19.95 and it will completely erase these traces.
People would buy the "program" and the system would appear clean.
Of course there was never a problem to begin with. They just scammed you. The software has no real purpose. It appears to be scanning your system and it does scan certain areas. These files are then sent back to the company for identity theft use.
