It never leaves your mind (at least, not mine). And that built-in "rev limiter" probably keeps me from doing stupid stuff. Yeah, accidents do happen and that's why I keep $1.65mm in life insurance...I'm worth more dead.
But seriously, I don't track the car right now for the reasons you stated. For me it's mostly local cruising, some highway and the occasional "BWAAAAPP!" through 1st and 2nd...heck, if I stay in second too long I'm already in ticket territory. I do know of a person that recently suffered a hang-gliding accident. He's probably never going to walk again and his family is basically screwed financially. Life is full of calculated risks...you can't steal second if you keep your feet on first.
