It will be either 1/4 or possibly 3/8, some pumps have a larger pipe that is swaged down to the heater hose size. If the pump is relatively new it may help to 'nick' the ID of the tube in the pump body with an old hacksaw blade to help collapse it and aid its removal.
Vettstr is correct also in the expansion & header tank concern. I dont know what you have in this area, but if you are thinking of running a remote header tank the fitting you are about to block off would become the recovery from such a system.
