That is only true of early 302s. Somewhere in the late 70s/early 80s they switched to the 351 firing order. Even if it was an early style cam I think only 2 cylinders are different, so those would be the only 2 to check. Now....you said that you adjusted the valves by watching the lifters lift and drop..... if that's the case, you weren't using the firing order anyway, you probably adjusted them correctly if you were adjusting according to the lifters.
