You are correct that the AEX and BEX cars were interspersed and I think (speculating as I do not know for sure) the chassis were completed (except motor mounts) in sequential order and then the motors assigned and the AEX/BEX (or AE/BE depending on where the car was headed) also assigned. The one caveat I have found is, I am not sure what went on from approx #500 to #1000. I have seen a 1958 Ace with AEX458 and a 1959 with AEX 1075, but have never seen anything in between and since they only built around 600 Aces, those numbers must have not been used for Aces. Maybe they went to Acecas or Greyhounds.
