You are right regards the passenger side mirror - useless.

Mine is purely there for cosmetic reasons i.e. providing some symmetry to the car along with the double hoops.

You will find that as Craig says without the roof the interior mirror picks up most things, and as the car is open a simple turn of the head picks up the rest.
