blykins,Keith,
No, not a cam change. The fact of the matter is, when the 460 prototype was built we had big dish pistons .020 in the hole. Although rated at 575 it was actually making 590-598. We knew there was more in it and ordered new custom Manleys which are 4.155 x 1.055/ w/16cc dish. We decked the block to get .010 in the hole, which all our builds are now. (Except Warhawk which is +.005) This yields 11.3 with our 64cc chamber and yes we run it at 30 degrees on pump gas.
The cam has always been a roller, .621 / .627, 254 / 260 w/110LSA. With minor jet change we picked-up to the 612-618 level consistently. I convinced Bill we should change the advertised rating to 600. If you make a rating that you sometimes don't meet by even 1-2HP, some guy will call (or write on the web) and say we gypped him. (Ask how we know). All our ratings are intentionally slightly conseravative to avoid this. Remember, we dyno engines when CAT is 30 or 40 in Jan. or 85-90 in Aug. That can mean 4-8HP. So they don't go out of here unless they're no lower than their rating. Some have been amazingly higher.
Keith, of course you're asking the sharp questions and here's that story. All our SBF builds that required 4500's were built with Vic. Jr.s and an Ede. adaptor for the 4500 flange. Not very pretty. Shortly after the 460 was running, our Man O'War single plane intake, designed with John K. from CHI was complete and available. We swapped that on and right at the top (6000 to 6400) we began to consistently get in the 620-625 range.
Cranky,
That brings us to the new design heads, in this case the 18 degree Man O'War (Bill loves that name...) 235cc head. Our previous head was the full CNC, 2.08x 1.60 200cc head-a very competent piece. The new head is "as-cast" (so far) and the port locations are stock. Only touched for a bowl blend. The special feature is the fact that runners and chambers are the same technology as our Warhawk LS heads which no Ford ever had before. When Bill gets an idea, he just builds it.
Those heads on the 460 got us a consistent 630-635, the gain all right at the top, (6000-6400). They were within 2-4HP from 3500 to 6000 with our CNC's. That's an as-cast head vs. CNC. Clearly there's room for development in the new head. So 460's are going out right about 625-635 on pump gas.
If anyone is not snoring yet, here's news from last week.
A set of these heads went on a 427 Drag build last week which normally sees 625-635HP. This is a C-14 engine with 13.75 CR., 696 / 683 cam. We normally pull these from 4000-7500. This one made 671 at 6800 and leveled-off at 7100. About a 40HP improvement. We didn't know the head was this good until we added 800 RPM to the test range.
Yes, the 6-bolt head will be good too but they're not here yet. Hopefully, December. They are raised intake and exhausts and sheetmetal only for right now. We're going to sell them "No Valve Job" at first for the NMCA/NMRA crazies who use 40 lbs boost all the time.
Sadly the 427's and 460's with our intake will not fit unnoticed in a Cobra (Or my ERA would have an aluminum one). However Cobra (and Pantera) guys have ordered them with Ede dual planes and 4150 / 870's and made 25 less HP but 30 MORE LbFt lower in the range. It's all good.
Roger, what's that address to send your TEE SHIRT?

Er-this was all told to me by "Manowar" CC Sponsor.
