I don't think Steve is completely off point. All he is saying, from my take, is that he feels that tax dollars should not be used to celebrate any holiday that is religious. The local tax dollars are what is being used to decorate the town. But the counter side of that is that Christmas, and Easter can no longer be government supported holidays. Government employees are being paid to have the day off with tax dollars while all offices are closed. This would require that any official office not be closed on any religious holiday, which would in turn result in less holidays seen by private employers. The American people would have a problem with this. Less time off without having to take vacation. My problem is the people who want the benefit of the holiday with time off with pay without taking vacation (free time off) but they are against seeing/hearing about it. I work with some Muslims that use the time around Christmas to their advantage, and then also take vacation around their religious holidays. I have asked a few how they felt about the company changing the holiday policy. You can take your holidays on any time throughout the year, but you have to work like a normal day if you did not choose the same holidays as others. Out of the 4 I asked, 1 felt that was fair, the others did not feel that they should have to work on christmas if the majority of the company was off with pay for the holiday. They wanted the benefit, but did not want to see the reason they were getting the benefit displayed.
