The pinion nut holds the pinion gear where it's supposed to be, front to back, and against the ring gear. If you have no pinion nut, then nothing is holding the gear lash to spec.
You can't set up a rear with no pinion nut. If the rear WAS set up, then why would the pinion nut be loose from the get go? Doesn't make sense.
