I have one puller fan wired with a thermostat, sender is threaded into intake manifold. I have on the dash a toggle switch to turn fan on before thermostat does (just in case) and I have a light on the dash to tell me when the fan is running. 390fe with 195 degree thermostat in the cooling system and the fan thermostat set at 195...never runs hot. (knock on wood). No pusher fans.

On a side note I would say overkill on the fans will suck some HP by making the alternator work harder. I don't know how much though.
