This question comes up regularly. If you get a copy of "the 12-volt doctors handbook" from any marine store you will have a wealth of information about just about any alternator problem. Basically a charge light recieved its power from the ignition switch, and was grounded at the alternator Auxiliary diode trio. When the alternator started producing DC, it back-fed the light, which no longer had a ground side,light went out. Any alternator shop should be able to look at your model,set this feature up for you. Its something we do all the time on marine engines.
