From my motocross days - fill up a balloon, or a "pregnancy preventer", with a appropriate lubricant, lash it tightly to the low end of the cable, and squeeze until it comes out at the top. Cyclo make a good quality silicon lube for nylon lined cable sheaths, warm wheel bearing grease to almost liquid for non-lined sheaths.
