The fuel gauge should be marked. There normally is a label attached to the back. If they are matched then one or the other is bad. You can pull the parts and do a bench check with a battery and some wire. The gauge requires power, ground and the wire from the sending unit, the sending unit requires a ground. Once power is applied to the gauge you can work the float up and down and watch the gauge for proper reading.
