Ya, Joe basically told me there was no need to use the wire. There would have to be some gap to allow for variances in the wheels. A 1/16" wobble at the hub would likely be around 1/2" of movement at the tread face though.

I'll try knocking the spinner back and see how much the wheel shifts.

Can't say I agree with your view of the safety wire though, if done correctly it will keep it tight. (but this has been hashed out in another thread)
