Don't leave out Florida...no state income tax, beautiful weather (except the occassional hurricane) and plenty to do in major metro areas like Miami, Tampa/St Pete or Orlando. And Daytona Speed Weeks.
And if you want to live very well...try Mexico, right across the US border. with the value of the dollar v. peso you can live very well on poco peso....and still come across for entertainment. A friend of mine retired from military and barely made it by in CA, moved across the border, rented a larger house than he had and hired a lady and her husband to keep up the house and run errands and still banks some for a rainy day.
