You're absolutely right Rick - I calculate the ram force required to be of the order of 2 Tonnes. I have resolved these bigger forces with struts and ties rather than putting members (and welds) in bending.

The "ram" is actually driven through a 12v car winch and pully arrangement, this multiplies the winch capacity of 660kg by 5 times

With 50 x 50 x 3mm box sections and a 3mm fillet weld the ultimate tensile capacity of a joint is of the order of 6 tonnes which allows for my less than perfect welding.

I will be testing with overloads before putting my Cobra under it!
