I've often thought a well setup Auto would be way better on the track. This was the thinking of some of the Can-Am engineers back in the 60's. I think Jim Hall ran an Auto in one of his Chaparal Can-Am cars. Someone can probably confirm this.
Anyway, my thinking is that with a modern auto using a converter with a sprag you would have very little engine braking. I reckon this is a good thing as you could power right up to your braking mark and then lift and have no engine breaking unsettling the balance of the car. You could then rely on your brakes to do the job they were designed for to pull you up.
With less things to concentrate on going into the corner i.e shifting down working the clutch etc you could maximise you braking and steering by giving it your full attention and then have a better chance of being on the right line going into the corner.
