When I did mine, I had Bob Jackson do the inspection and it was relatively painless, other than setting it up. These are car guys, so they are more interested in talking shop and cars and getting you on the road (safely).

I put together all of my receipts based upon what I paid taxes on already and what I did not pay taxes on. I did a spreadsheet breaking the two down and brought that to the Secretary of State with me. I had everything organized, and they were happy with that. They geve me temporary plates because they had to ensure that everything came back okay. I had a title and permanent plates shortly thereafter.
