Safety wire is used extensively in the aircraft industry and has been for many many years. It's not the strength of the wire that keeps bolts on, but the direction the wire is fed through the holes in the bolt heads, which prevents vibration/shrinkage loosening. Even when temperature affects the pins or bolts, the lockwire will prevent the bolt or pin from backing out. I've inspected hundreds of aircraft engines and components upon disassembly that had loose bolts but had not backed out. It is a tried-and-true method of keeping your knock offs from vibrating loose. Pins are great for quick pit stops in competition and race cars, but lockwire may be more dependable.
