I just heard a report on the news that the miles drivien in the month of May is down, about 20 billion miles less than one year ago. I think the total number is around 250 billion so that's around 8%. The government is squaking that with people driving less and buying fewer gallons of fuel that there is now a shortfall in tax collection from fuel sales.

1) if lowering the speed limit actually saved fuel there would be even less taxes collected from fuel sales.

2) As people go to better mpg cars, less taxes will be collected.

3) I have noticed that more and more people are driving slower, in my area. I almost never see anyone pulled over any more.

Add this all up, and the high price of fuel is hurting government revenue. The government is never content to live on less . So, lower the speed limit and write tickets all day long, and they can collect more money than before. The government cares not about poor people. This is all about them collecting more money.
