The Mark II, 427 side oiler GT-40 won Le Mans FOUR years in a row!

Research and development for the 427 Cobra was ordered STOPPED by Ford motor company in favor of R and D on the GT-40. Shelby, complying with Ford, turned his attention to the GT. A few folks were thrown a bone or two in order to continue what little R and D the 427 Cobra would see in it's short life. You gotta wonder, 'what might have been' had more dollars been spent on the 'Turd'.

Of course the actual "Turd" was the nickname for the first 427 Cobra, it was an alloy 390 experimental engine with the 289 leaf spring suspension. The later cars were designed with coil spring suspension utilizing a Ford Motor Company computer.
